FILMING IS UNDERWAY ON GOETHE VS. SCHILLER, STARRING HEIKE MAKATSCH
“Goethe vs. Schiller” is a star-studded comedy series about the extraordinary friendship and rivalry between two of Germany’s most celebrated poets, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller, set in late 18th-century Weimar.
Moritz Bleibtreu stars as Goethe, with David Kross as Schiller, Jasmin Schwiers as Christiane Vulpius, Heike Makatsch as Duchess Anna Amalia, Daniel Zillmann as August Wilhelm Iffland, Kai Ivo Baulitz as Gottfried Herder and Max Schimmelpfennig as the young Duke Carl August.
Celebrated and successful, Goethe finds himself in the midst of a creative and personal crisis when the younger, penniless but fiercely ambitious Schiller bursts into his life. Between rivalry, jealousy and mutual admiration, the two repeatedly find themselves caught up in absurd situations — from court intrigues and hunting trips to wild nights out and chaotic theatre rehearsals.
Goethe’s established status and Schiller’s restless idealism constantly collide. Yet despite their differences, they gradually realise that they might need each other more than they are willing to admit — inspiring each other to reach new creative heights.
The series combines historical figures and events with contemporary humour, sharp, fast-paced dialogue and a playful take on the lives of two icons of German literature.
